About “Moyen” sized Poodles
Standard poodles come in 3 recognized sized here in North America; Toy, Miniature, and Standard. However in Europe, the FCI kennel club recognizes a 4th size, the Medium variety, also known as Moyen.
The Medium, or Moyen, variety has its own unique lines of breeding over in Europe, and there are very few true ones that have been imported to the USA. Most “Moyen” poodles over here are simply intervariety crosses. This means that a Miniature poodle was bred to a Standard poodle. This does not make a Moyen Poodle, this tends to just create small intervariety bred standards or oversized intervariety bred miniatures.
A true Medium poodle stands about 14 to 18 inches tall. Anything smaller is a Miniature, and anything larger is a Standard according to the FCI Breed Standard. When you intervariety breed, the puppies will usually be a range of sizes, there is less consistency due to the drastic size difference of the parents, and the puppies usually end up being larger than a true Medium sized poodle in the end.
Some people may refer to my Small Standard Poodles as “Moyen” or “Medium” sized, however mine are truly just small standards ranging from 30-45lbs and about 20-24” tall. The average standard poodle weighs 45-60lbs and stands 24-26” tall.
